The Arrival of Hybrid Fiber Laser Cutting Technology in Ontario

Ball Service Group has brought the first Amada 9kW ENSIS 3015 RIe to Ontario, helping individuals and businesses across the province handle projects with enhanced precision. With a plethora of features to enhance laser efficiency, accuracy, and reliability, BSG’s Amada Laser Cutting technology is capable of managing high capacity projects with an impressive turnaround time.

One way the BSG and the Amada laser cutting machine is able to achieve this is through its unique hybrid combination of the assist gasses O2 and Nitrogen. These assist gasses have countless benefits that make it essential for laser cutting. A few examples is that the assist gasses blow away debris left during the cutting process, allowing for a cleaner finish, as well as cooling the area around the cut to prevent deformation, warping, or micro-cracking.

Nitrogen is a non-reactive gas, it prevents oxidation or material discoloration that would otherwise be caused by O2. O2, on the other hand, is reactive, but the reaction it has with certain metals can actually be beneficial. It can have an exothermic reaction and produce more heat, making the cutting process quicker. Typically one chooses between using one assist gas over the other for laser cutting, but BSG leverages the benefits of both while breaking down their respective limitations. This allows BSG’s laser cutting service to have an expansive list of compatible materials, benefiting both from nitrogen and O2.

BSG’s hybrid assist gasses are one of its most unique offerings, but there are also other features unique to the Amada laser cutting machine that makes its laser cutting capabilities all the more efficient and intuitive.

Features and Capabilities of the BSG Amada Laser Cutting Machine

In this section of the article, we will dive into some of the stand-out features of the Amada laser, and how each of these features amplifies the laser cutting machine’s performance.

The ENSIS Fiber Laser Engine

BSG’s Amada laser cutting machine has the ENSIS fiber laser engine, which is what powers the laser beam used to cut materials. The engine contains an automated, intuitive beam control unit which automatically adjusts the laser beam depending on the material thickness. For example, tubes often have varying wall thicknesses, requiring continuous adjustment of cutting parameters like laser power, speed, and assist gas pressure to achieve consistent results. ENSIS’ intuitive beam control technology allows for consistency as well as efficiency and effectiveness with laser tube cutting.

AMADA’s VPSS 4ie Tube Software

Not every laser cutting machine is powerful or intuitive enough to conquer cutting projects involving tubes and piping. Tubes and pipes are inherently complex shapes compared to the more traditional and simplified flat sheet cutting. When cutting flat sheets, the distance between the laser nozzle and the material remains constant. With tubes and pipes, the curved surfaces mean that this distance continually changes unless dynamically adjusted. Amada has technically adapted to these challenges by developing their VPSSS 4ie Tube Software, specifically designed to consistently execute laser tube cutting. This software has pre-programming for common tube shaping which helps maintain accuracy throughout the production process. The Amada laser cutting machine is equipped with a main chuck and support chuck which function to ensure precise cutting of circular materials. The support chuck moves simultaneously with the main chuck to prevent scratching or slipping, as well as deflection or twisting.

i-Process Monitoring

Another automated feature of the Amada laser cutting machine is its i-Process Monitoring technology, which is capable of analyzing optimal wavelengths of various materials. The technology then uses this analysis to identify cutting errors while processing, and will abruptly stop the cutting to allow for the issue to be corrected. This saves on costs and materials that would otherwise be irreversibly damaged.

i-Nozzle Checker

Like i-Process Monitoring, the i-Nozzle Checker is programmed to detect incorrect positioning, centering, shape, and diameter of the nozzle. If it identifies damage on the nozzle, it is automated to replace the nozzle instantly and continue the cutting process with a spare.

Water Assist Cutting System II (WACS II)

The Water Assist Cutting System II (WACS II), when enabled, ejects cooling mist throughout the cutting process to prevent heat buildup and allow quick, precise cutting in tight parameters. Heat buildup can lead to distortion and warping of the metals, which has a major effect on the end product. This is especially valuable for thick materials which have a longer cutting time and, therefore, more heat buildup when processing.

Benefits to Local Businesses and Industries

Local businesses all across Ontario can greatly benefit from the introduction of Amada’s robust laser cutting technology. Laser cutting has a wide range of applications that can support various industries. Amada’s intuitive technology allows BSG to offer accessible servicing of high-capacity projects with a plethora of lag reduction features for a quick turnaround time. Features like Amada’s VPSS Tube Software and ENSIS Fiber Laser pave the way for high precision cutting with the ability to dependably execute tight cuts.

Plumbing and Oil & Gas

Thanks to Amada’s VPSS Tube Software, BSG is capable of servicing businesses in need of swift, accurate pipe and tube cutting. As briefly touched on, not every laser cutting machine can cut pipes or tubes as the dynamic shape makes it hard to maintain accuracy and likely to malfunction. Amada’s software and chucks are built to allow the laser to cut dynamically and reliably for circular materials such as pipes and tubes. WACS II is also used for pipe and tube cutting to prevent heat buildup, leading to an even cleaner finish.

Agriculture

The Amada laser cutting machine has many applications related to agriculture. Various features of the Amada allow for consistent accuracy with the cutting process, meaning it can execute cuts for chassis with precise accuracy for high functionality and durability. This can also apply to farming architecture.

Construction

The Amada laser cutting machine can achieve high precision, which ensures components fit perfectly together. This is critical for structural integrity in building construction. Along with this is the ability to cut complex shapes and intricate designs with exact specifications, allowing for more innovative architectural designs. Thanks to its hybrid assist gasses, it can cut a wide range of materials used in construction, including steel, aluminum, brass, and more. Additionally, it’s powerful enough to cut through materials of various thickness with high reliability due to its intuitive software features.

Other Local Businesses

BSG’s Amada laser cutting machine empowers small businesses by offering high precision, customization, and material versatility, allowing them to create unique and branded products. They enable the rapid production of personalized signage, home decor, jewelry, and custom packaging, as well as vehicle chassis, architecture, irrigation systems, manifolds, and much more, all while upholding high quality standards. The ability to work with various materials such as wood, acrylic, metal, and leather allows Ontario businesses to diversify their product offerings. Additionally, laser cutting minimizes material waste, reduces manual labor, and maintains clean edges, enhancing overall cost-effectiveness and product aesthetics. This technology facilitates creative freedom and scalability, making it easier for small businesses to fulfill custom orders efficiently, stand out in the market, and increase profitability. The possibilities are endless!
